The Pro Football Hall of Fame Game opens the 2026 NFL season tonight — the Arizona Cardinals against the Carolina Panthers, 8pm ET at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio, on NBC and Peacock.
And every year the same question spikes the moment kickoff arrives: does any of this count?
The reason nobody can answer it in one word is that “count” means at least four different things, and the honest answer flips depending on which one you meant.

So a receiver who catches three touchdowns tonight has caught three touchdowns. They are recorded. They are on the stat sheet. They will simply never be part of his career receiving-touchdown total, because that number, by definition, counts regular-season games and nothing else.
The Part That Actually Matters Tonight
If you want to watch this game for something real, ignore the score.
Injuries carry over at full weight. There is no asterisk on a preseason ACL. A player hurt in Canton tonight misses regular-season games in September, and possibly the whole year. This is the single biggest reason coaches sit their established starters — the downside is permanent and the upside is a statistic nobody will ever look up.
Roster spots carry over at full weight too. Every team has to get to 53 players. For a fringe player, a preseason game is not an exhibition — it is the job interview, and there are only three or four of them. Tonight, two teams get a fourth.
Why These Two Teams Play Four Games
The Hall of Fame Game is an additional preseason game, not a replacement for one. The two teams selected play four; the other 30 clubs play three.
That is also why the participants get a head start. While the rest of the league is still in training camp, Arizona and Carolina have already had a live-tackling, full-officiating dress rehearsal.
For the record: this is Arizona’s sixth trip to Canton, and the Cardinals are 1–3–1 in the five before it. Carolina has never played in it — not once since the franchise entered the league in 1995.
Why Canton, Ohio?
This is the question people assume has a boring answer. It does not.
The NFL was founded in Canton. In 1920, representatives of a handful of professional clubs met in a car dealership in Canton — Ralph Hay’s Hupmobile showroom — and formed the American Professional Football Association, which was renamed the National Football League in 1922. Jim Thorpe, who played for the local Canton Bulldogs, was named its first president.
When the league went looking for a home for its Hall of Fame decades later, Canton had the strongest claim of any city in the country, and the Pro Football Hall of Fame opened there in 1963.
So the game is not in Canton because Canton won a bid. It is in Canton because that is where the league started.
What Else Is Happening This Weekend
The game always sits on Hall of Fame enshrinement weekend. The Class of 2026 — Drew Brees, Larry Fitzgerald, Luke Kuechly, Roger Craig and Adam Vinatieri — is inducted on 8 August.
There is a neat symmetry in this year’s matchup: Fitzgerald is a Cardinal and Kuechly is a Panther. The two teams playing tonight are the two teams with someone going into the building down the road.
