The 2027–28 FAFSA opens to everyone on 1 October 2026. It uses your 2025 tax return, which is already filed, so nothing is waiting on paperwork.

The federal deadline is 30 June 2028. That number is real, it is published, and treating it as your deadline is one of the more expensive mistakes a family can make.

Why the federal deadline is nearly meaningless

Three separate deadlines apply, and only one of them is the late one:

DeadlineWhenMatters?
Federal30 June 2028Rarely — the money is usually gone
StateOften January–FebruaryYes
Your college’sSet by each institutionYes

For scale, in the previous cycle several state priority deadlines fell in mid-January and early February. The 2027–28 state deadlines have not been published yet and will shift by roughly a year, but the shape does not change: they are months ahead of the federal one.

And some aid is first-come, first-served — which is the part that actually costs money. Certain state and institutional programmes are funded from a fixed pot and awarded until it is empty. Being eligible does not help if you apply after it runs out. So the practical deadline is not a date on a website at all: it is whenever the money for your state and your college is gone, which nobody publishes in advance. That is why every financial aid office gives the same advice, which sounds like nagging and is not: file in October.

What to do in September, before it opens

  1. Create the FSA ID. The student needs one. Any contributing parent needs their own separate one — they cannot share, and a parent cannot create the student’s.
  2. Do it now, not on 1 October. Identity verification can take days. Every year, families sit down to file on the first morning and discover they cannot log in.
  3. Check names match. The name on the FSA ID must match Social Security records exactly. A middle initial or a hyphen in the wrong place causes a mismatch that takes days to resolve.
  4. Find your 2025 return. The form pulls tax data, but having the return to hand makes the review straightforward.
  5. Look up your state’s deadline once the 2027–28 dates are published, and diarise it. That is your real date.

Two changes worth knowing

Beta submissions count. Access has been opening in stages, with beta available by request and the waitlist lifting mid-September. A form submitted in beta is processed exactly like one submitted after 1 October — it is not a practice run.

Returning students get pre-populated data. Prior application information carries over, which makes the renewal considerably faster than a first filing. It also means checking the pre-filled fields rather than assuming they are still correct.

The prior-prior year point

The 2027–28 form uses 2025 income. This trips up families who assume they must wait for a current tax return.

You do not. The relevant return was filed in early 2026 and the information is already available, which is precisely why the form can open in October rather than in spring.

The 2027–28 Free Application for Federal Student Aid opens to all applicants on 1 October 2026, with staged beta access beforehand and the waitlist reported as lifting in mid-September 2026; submissions made during beta are processed as normal submissions. The form uses 2025 tax year information under the prior-prior year rule, and the federal deadline is 30 June 2028. State and institutional deadlines are set independently and are typically much earlier; deadlines cited from the previous cycle, including mid-January and early February examples, are illustrative and the 2027–28 state deadlines had not been published at the time of writing. Details were compiled from College Investor, Savingforcollege, Edvisors, Sallie and related financial aid guidance. studentaid.gov is the authoritative source for the FAFSA, FSA ID creation and federal deadlines, and each state agency and college publishes its own deadlines. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

When does the 2027–28 FAFSA open?

1 October 2026 for everyone. Access has been rolling out in stages beforehand, with beta access available by request and the waitlist lifting in mid-September 2026.

Does a beta submission count?

Yes. A submission made during the beta period is a real submission and is processed in the same way as one filed after 1 October.

Which tax year does it use?

The 2025 tax return. The form uses prior-prior year income, so the return is already filed and nothing is waiting on this year’s taxes.

What is the deadline?

The federal deadline is 30 June 2028. That is not the deadline that matters for most families — state deadlines and individual college deadlines fall much earlier, often in January and February.

Why does filing early matter if the federal deadline is so late?

Because some aid is limited and awarded until the money runs out, and many state and institutional programmes use their own much earlier cut-offs. Filing in June 2028 can be within the federal deadline and long after the funds for that year were allocated.

What can I do before 1 October?

Create an FSA ID. The student needs one and a contributing parent needs their own separate one. Identity verification can take days, and not having it ready is the most common cause of delay on day one.
