“Costco settles — you could get more than $500” is doing the rounds, and it is technically accurate. It is also, for the large majority of people reading it, irrelevant. Here is the part the headlines skip.

Read this first: this settlement covers Washington State residents only. The case was brought under Washington’s commercial email law. If you were living anywhere else when Costco emailed you, you cannot claim — and filing anyway is a waste of your time.

What the Case Was About

The class action alleged that Costco Wholesale sent promotional emails with subject lines that were misleading — the kind of claim that only becomes a lawsuit in a state with a specific commercial-email statute. Washington has one. Costco agreed to a $14 million settlement to resolve it, without admitting wrongdoing.

Are You Eligible? The Three Tests

1. Where you livedWashington State resident at the time you received the email — this is the one that disqualifies most people
2. WhenEmail received between June 2, 2021 and July 7, 2026
3. WhatA commercial email sent by Costco or someone acting on its behalf
Membership? Not required. You do not have to be (or have been) a Costco member.

How Much Will You Actually Get?

Payments are pro rata — the fund is divided among everyone who files a valid claim. That means nobody can tell you your exact amount today, and the widely-quoted “more than $500” figure is a ceiling scenario, not a promise. The more people who file, the smaller each share.

The genuinely good news: no proof or documentation is required to file. You do not need to dig out old emails or receipts.

How to File — and the Scam Warning

  • The court-approved claims site is washingtoncommercialemailsettlement.com. You can file there without a Claim ID and check eligibility at the same time.
  • You can also print the form and mail it — it must be postmarked by August 24, 2026.
  • Payments can be sent by PayPal, Venmo, Zelle or a mailed check.
  • ⚠️ Nobody legitimate will charge you a fee to file. Any site asking for payment, or for your full Social Security number to “process” the claim, is not the official administrator.

What Happens After You File

The court holds a final approval hearing on October 2, 2026. Payments only go out after the settlement is approved and any appeals are resolved — so expect months, not weeks. That is normal for class actions and is not a sign anything has gone wrong.

If you are checking settlement deadlines generally, the $2.5 billion Amazon Prime settlement has a far tighter window — that one closes July 27.
