“How much does an NFL team cost” has a number attached to it — and then a much more interesting answer underneath.

What Teams Have Actually Sold For

Valuations are estimates; sale prices are facts. Two recent ones reset the market:

  • Washington Commanders — $6.05 billion (2023), to a group led by Josh Harris. At the time, a record for any American sports franchise.
  • Seattle Seahawks — a reported $9.612 billion sale agreement, the largest price ever paid for an NFL team and roughly 59% above the Commanders figure.

That jump in a short span is the clearest evidence that NFL valuations are not slowing down.

Why You Cannot Buy One Anyway

This is the part almost every “NFL team value” list leaves out. Having $7 billion does not get you a team:

  • There is no market. NFL franchises are private. They sell only when an owner decides to sell — which happens roughly once every couple of years across all 32 teams.
  • The other owners decide. Any sale requires approval by a supermajority of existing NFL owners. Money does not override that vote.
  • Institutional money was banned until 2024. That year the league permitted institutional investors for the first time — limited minority stakes, not control. Analysts noted the change effectively created a valuation floor under every team, because it added a new class of buyers.

The Exception: Green Bay

One franchise really is owned by the public — the Green Bay Packers, whose shares are held by hundreds of thousands of fans. But those shares are not an investment: they pay no dividends, cannot be resold at a profit, and confer no meaningful control. It is a certificate on a wall and a vote at a meeting. That is also why Lambeau Field has never been moved to a bigger market — there is no owner who could move it.

Where the Money Comes From

NFL valuations are unusually stable because most revenue is shared national media money, distributed equally. A team in the smallest market receives the same enormous television cheque as one in New York. Local revenue — suites, sponsorship, stadium naming — is where teams separate, which is why stadium economics drive the top of the list. It also explains the sums flowing down to the sideline: head coaches at $20 million and a commissioner at roughly $64 million.
