Season 9 closes with an episode that spends most of its runtime being cruel and its final ninety seconds being the most sincere thing the show has ever done. Here is what happens, in order.
1. It Opens by Killing Everyone
Not our Smiths — a different universe’s. There, Rick, Morty and the entire Smith family die after eating an explosively spicy sauce. It is a throwaway death played for laughs, and it exists purely to set up the actual premise.
Because when a Rick dies, dozens of other Ricks portal in with their Mortys for what amounts to an estate sale: the dead Rick’s inventions, first-come, first-served. A universe’s worth of grief reduced to a car-boot sale.
2. The Portal Gun Junior
At the sale, a sunglasses-wearing Morty hands Morty Prime a Portal Gun Junior. Our Morty starts hopping dimensions — and stumbles into one where his family appears perfect. Not fixed. Not repaired. Just perfect, as though the damage never happened.
3. The Back to the Future Detour
To get home, Morty has to find that dimension’s Rick — an MIT Rick — and convince him to build a portal gun. The episode leans openly into a Back to the Future homage here: the boy stuck in the wrong timeline, trying to talk a scientist into helping him return.
4. And Then It Takes It Away
MIT Rick does not do much to help. What he does do is accidentally kill himself — and the entire perfect family.
Which triggers another Rick estate sale. And that is where Morty is reunited with Rick C-137.
The structure is the joke and the point at once: Morty is only ever returned to his own Rick by the death of a better one. He does not get the perfect family. He gets his.
5. The Ending
Morty comes home traumatised, and does something the show almost never lets him do without undercutting it — he tells Summer and his mother that he loves them.
Then, late at night, a drunk Rick drags him out for a bike ride. And calls him his son.
Morty calls Rick his father.
No reset, no undercut, no gag to deflate it. The episode simply ends there, at peace — which, for a show built on refusing exactly this, is the loudest thing it could have done.
Why the Hot Sauce Opening Matters
It is easy to read the cold open as a disposable gag. It is not. The episode opens with a family dying meaninglessly and their Rick’s life being auctioned to strangers — and ends with the one thing that cannot be auctioned. Everything in between is Morty being shown a better family and learning that better is not the same as his.
Did Rick or Morty Die in the Season 9 Finale?
The finale opens in a different universe, where that reality’s Rick, Morty and the whole Smith family have just died after eating an explosively spicy sauce. Their deaths are what triggers the Rick estate sale that starts the plot - dozens of Ricks portalling in to bid on a dead Rick’s inventions.
The second set of deaths is the one that lands. Morty dimension-hops until he finds what looks like a perfect version of his family. To get home he needs that reality’s Rick - the “MIT Rick’” - to build him a portal gun. Instead, MIT Rick accidentally kills himself and that entire perfect family. It is the second estate sale of the episode, and it is what finally reunites Morty with Rick C-137.
So: a Rick dies. A Morty’s family dies. Our Rick and our Morty do not. What Morty carries home is not grief for himself - it is having watched a version of his own family die in front of him, which is why he goes straight to Summer and Beth and tells them he loves them.
Quick answers
- Does Rick die? Not Rick C-137. An alternate Rick does - two, counting the opening.
- Does Morty die? No. An alternate Morty’s family dies.
- Who actually dies? A spicy-sauce Smith family in the cold open, and the “perfect” family plus MIT Rick.
- Is this the final season? The finale is written as an emotional endpoint, but it is a season ending - not a confirmed series ending.
