American college football owns the largest crowds in world sport. Eight of its stadiums seat more than 100,000 people — a threshold no NFL venue reaches. Here is the 2026 order, and the change that may be about to break it.

The Change That May Rewrite the Top of This List

Penn State is midway through a $700 million revitalization of Beaver Stadium. Athletic director Pat Kraft has said the 2026 capacity will be “north of 108,000”, with a chance of exceeding 109,000 — an increase of nearly 3,000 seats.

Michigan Stadium holds 107,601. If those projections hold, Beaver Stadium becomes the largest stadium in the United States this season — ending a run at the top that has lasted decades.

Official Capacity vs What They Actually Hold

Every number above is an official capacity, and the biggest crowds routinely beat it. Beaver Stadium’s single-game record is 111,030 (vs Ohio State, 2024), with 111,015 at a White Out against Oregon — both well above its listed 106,572. Standing room, temporary seating and field-level access add thousands on the biggest nights.

A note on the Rose Bowl figure. Lists commonly show 91,136, but the venue’s own stated capacity is 89,702, and renovations are set to reduce it to roughly 72,000. We break down why the numbers differ on our Rose Bowl capacity page.

Why College Beats the Pros on Size

The largest NFL venue does not approach 100,000 — Lambeau Field holds 81,441 and is the league’s second biggest. College stadiums were built on cheap land by institutions with a century of alumni to seat, and they were expanded repeatedly without the luxury-suite economics that cap modern professional venues. The result: eight six-figure stadiums, all of them on campuses.

Even so, none of them is the largest sports venue in America. That is Indianapolis Motor Speedway at 257,327 permanent seats — more than double Michigan.

The 2026 season opens with Week 0 on August 27, so most of these will be full within weeks.
